I own a hotel in East hazel Crest, Cook County IL. its now called the Economy Inn. i’ve had this place for 10 years. My property is surrounded by other much higher class hotels such as the Super 8 Ramada Inn, Comfort Inn. My hotel has not had as much business as the other hotels around. To make a living and survive we must take in weekly customers as they provide income. The Cook County Police Dept. has absolutely buried us in tickets. They are issuing tickets to just my hotel and not others. The police make "rounds" and drive around all hotels a few times a day to see whats happening. Because other hotels are always full of customers they never keep track of which cars were there all week and which ones were not. But in our case our hotel mainly consists of weeklies and monthly. we tell customers after 6 days please check out for a day and come back, but they never do come back after we basically kicked them out. So the police remembers the cars that were there all week and they ticket us! Cook County has a 7 Day ordinance-meaning all hotels in cook county can not keep guests in there hotel rooms for more than 7 days. if so you will be ticketed(as i was several times) for 250$ and increasing. We have gone to court and trialed these tickets, the judge was in out favor because the party staying in the room for over 7 days did not show up, i would keep doing this but paying my lawyer over and over gets expensive. The cook county police dept. came to my hotel and threatened to take away my business license because they were getting frustrated with me. so my question is, is there any lawyer out there that has experience anywhere in the country that filed a lawsuit against an ordinance like this. please someone help me, if you are a lawyer please leave a contact number or message it to me, from there i will contact you and have you talk to my lawyer about how to pursue this case. i live in new york but come to IL frequently to manage my property. is there any petition that i can get my hands on to have people fill out and give to the county so they can Take down this ordinance. on my ticket it says the ordinance is in ch.10 sec 248. thanks allot.

i tried some solutions that frank r had previously stated. i tried the flyers but people would drive by and take them down. i tried telling them why ticket me and not the cars, they argued that im the owner and i should know who’s staying for 7 days. i told them that different people have different shifts to work the desk, but they said inform all your employees. this has been going on for 8 years and every ticketing case has been dropped every time. NOW they want to take it to the administrative court the town court, in this town the police here run everything, so im now screwed.. its called the "7 day stay" thats written on my tickets. most of the police officers are nice, its just the seargant thats a jerk. hes the one thats usually threating me, he comes in saying "javed, cut the crap, dont ruin my hotels and stop violating this ordinance cause we both know your doing it and blah blah blah." my lawyer says he needs a reference, another lawyer that has experience with this case.

Calm down. You do need a lawyer but from what I can see it seems that the tickets are going to the patrons and your only mistake is the fact that you didn’t get around to kicking them out. You do not have an obligation to be particurlarly efficient in yome our business in order to have it.. You do not have to know weather someone checked out or not, nor do you have to kick anybody out for any reason that the cops say.. Neither do you ever, ever have to speak with a police officer on these matters again. Post signage like crazy for your patrons. "you are at risk of being ticketed at your expence….. bla bla…" Are these street cops going to subpiena your records to prove a ticket in court?? No. Take them as they come and go to court and say you didn’t know and that signs are posted, and that you didn’t bring your data, and you are innocent of the charge and keep going back and keep saying the same things until the judge realises that you being harrassed by the cops only wastes his time. They have to issue you a license. You may also want to take some preemptive action against the particular officers ticketing you. Start with a polite explanation of the fact that you can’t understand why they are ticketing you instead of the cars. They will get the picture that you are giong to stand up for yourself and that you are not affraid to throw punches back in their direction. Don’t let some moron cop mess up your business.
